Saint Colombano Sanctuary
The sanctuary dates back to a long time ago. According to tradition San Colombano was already the seat of the Benedictines around the 12th – 14th centuries, a monastery that gave the town its name.
Part of the building dates back to 1645 and it has a beautiful Baroque façade, now transformed in apse, since the entrance was closed.
The roofed portico in front of the new entrance was built in 1884 and some rooms adjacent to the chapel are more recent.
The interior consists of a single rather long nave of which the two bodies belonging to different eras are visible.
The side walls are enriched by numerous votive paintings while the back wall has a beautiful canvas depicting the Saint. The small bell tower, which, seen from a distance, seems isolated, is incorporated with the facade of the entrance.
From the esplanade surrounding the church, where a picnic area has been set up, you can enjoy a beautiful view over Valcasotto.
