Bressani tower and Belvedere Gardens

Mondovì

La Torre dei Bressani (Bressani Civic Tower) in Mondovì is located in a beautifully panoramic spot in the Belvedere Gardens (Giardini del Belvedere) in the neighborhood of Piazza. Built in the 14th century, it was first and foremost the bell tower of the church of Saint Andrew until the church, along with the nearby Franciscan monastery, was demolished by Napoleon. It’s was called “Torre dei Bressani” (Bressani Civic Tower) in honor of an important family of the time. In 1759, geophysicist Giovanni Battista Beccaria, from Mondovì, used the tower as a trigonometric point to measure the terrestrial meridian arc between Andrate (Torino) and Mondovì as well as to calculate the circumference of the equator. In the mid-19th century the façades of the tower were restored, the battlements were modified from Guelph to Ghibelline style, the four Gothic arches were renovated and the single-hand clock faces were mounted, each five meters in diameter. The Belvedere Gardens were completed in 1903 for the floral exhibition and today they offer a magnificent view of the Langhe and the Alpine arc (the name Belvedere refers to the beautiful view). At the entrance, you will find a small, neo-gothic building which houses a weather station of the Italian Air Force. The tower and gardens are home to “Il Parco del Tempo” (The Time Park) which is a journey through the history of time-keeping. It was inspired by the presence of numerous sundials in Mondovì.
