The Viota and the funicular

Mondovì

If you are arriving from the neighborhood of Breo and want to go up to Piazza by foot, turn left at the end of the former San Francesco Hospital and continue up following la Viota pathway. This pedestrian path connects the neighborhood of Mondovì Breo with Mondovì Piazza and, halfway up the hill, it runs parallel to the funicular tracks. La Viota pathway can also be reached by taking Via Funicolare street to Via Garelli street to a short stretch of the paved road that goes from Breo to Piazza.

La Funicolare (the Funicular) links the lower and upper parts of Mondovì and has been an important symbol of Mondovì since 1886, when it began operating. Its original steam power system was later replaced by a counterweight water system. In 1926 the funicular was converted to electricity. In 1975 the funicular service was suspended. The new funicular railway, with its carriage designed by renowned designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, re-opened in 2006, and adds charm and speed to your visit of both historic areas of Mondovì, Breo and Piazza.
